Dentistry has always had a strong emphasis on the aesthetic impact of its work. We appreciate the significant impact on patients’ lives that the appearance of reconstructions has, and our dentist in Ipswich provides cosmetic treatment options to our local community as a standard part of dental services. Let’s explain what we do here at Hawthorn Drive Dental Practice, and why we do it so well.
Porcelain veneers
Whether you prefer to call them bondings, dental laminates or veneers, they have been at the forefront of cosmetic dentistry since the 1980s. The underlying concept is simple: sheets of porcelain fabricated to match your tooth shade and slightly oversized are delivered to the clinic. Once attached to the front of your teeth, their final shape is formed using tools in the clinic.
When a full set of veneers is applied, the shade of your smile becomes entirely under your control, whether your goals are for a slightly brighter, healthier smile or more of a dazzling Hollywood aesthetic. As they are individually crafted for the patient, veneers don’t have to be of constant thickness, and being installed oversized and carved into shape gives a great deal of flexibility at our dentist in Ipswich when it comes to correcting minor imperfections. Chipped or cracked teeth can be obscured, and slight misalignments can be hidden by placing the veneers straighter than the teeth upon which they sit.
The fitting process
During a fitting appointment, the teeth that are receiving the veneers have to be prepared; this involves removing a very thin layer of enamel on the front teeth, equal to the thickness of the veneer. The veneer can then be attached, provided that an appropriately textured surface has been created and UV resin is used to bond the underside of the veneer to the front of the tooth.
This process is minimally invasive, but local numbing can be used to help with some unpleasant vibration sensations of the drill for anxious patients who find any form of treatment distressing. IV sedation can be used to ensure a calm demeanour during the procedure and no memory of the treatment afterwards.
Getting the most out of treatment
Dental veneers, whether you are interested in a full set or just a single restoration to match the rest of your teeth, should be seen as an investment worth protecting. Veneers are highly resistant to staining and cannot be attacked by cavities.
But there are health concerns to consider. The enamel at the front of the tooth has to be looked after, as cavities can start if the veneer becomes loose or moves. This makes bi-annual check-ups all the more important, as this particular type of cavity has very few symptoms and is only likely to be picked up during an examination.
The most common way that veneers fail is by debonding, where they detach from the front of the tooth. If this occurs, return to our dentist in Ipswich with the veneer, and we can reattach them the same day, depending on the underlying cause.
